Action: Waste
A ‘mega Athenaeum’, such as the University of Pisa, cannot but have an important impact on waste production.
CoSA’s Waste Contact Person has promoted an agreement with CONAI to design a new urban waste cycle management for the University of Pisa and to define a specific communication campaign. The design and communication campaign are being finalised in collaboration with the company Contarina S.p.A., with the aim of significantly reducing the generation of waste, especially non-recyclable waste, and increasing the percentage of separate waste collection by aligning the university with best practices.
The University’s educational, research and service activities, distributed throughout the urban and extra-urban areas of Pisa, involve the production of various types of special waste, mainly chemical, biological, and waste electrical and electronic equipment. The overall quantity of special waste produced by the University averages around 50,000 kg per year, although it is not possible to indicate a certain and constant figure for the production of special waste, due to numerous factors that influence the trend, such as the variability that characterises research activities, the dynamism of the University “system” (relocation of structures, building works, etc. with the consequent need for extraordinary disposal), as well as external factors, such as the pandemic occurred in the last three years. Special waste management is carried out in compliance with the current regulations (Legislative Decree no. 152/06 and subsequent amendments and additions). The awareness of all staff involved in various ways in waste management for adopting correct practices to reduce negative impacts on the environment is growing steadily in recent years, not only to meet regulatory requirements (a necessary condition) but also with a view to sustainability.
