Action: Mobility
The University of Pisa covers a large portion of travel in a city of around 90,000 inhabitants. The University’s facilities are spread throughout the city, but there are also a few campuses outside the built-up area.
Promoting sustainable travel habits is an unavoidable objective that the university pursues by seeking to establish synergies with external bodies too. Particularly important is the collaboration with the Municipality of Pisa to improve the interconnection of its centres (especially with regard to cycling), but also the cooperation with Autolinee Toscane and other companies, with which the University has stipulated conventions for public and private transport.
Another field of action is improving the offer of secure bicycle parking areas within the University’s facilities: given the size of Pisa, the bicycle is a very popular option, but is penalised by frequent thefts.
In 2022, the University draw up a “Home-Work travel Plan”, a useful tool for planning interventions and evaluating the effects of the actions taken.
Since 2003, the University has identified the figure of the Mobility Manager, introduced in companies and public administrations by the Decree of the Ministry of the Environment on 27/03/1998, and made compulsory by Decree Law 34/2020, converted into Law 77/2020, for all companies or public bodies with more than 100 employees.
