The 2030 Agenda at the University of Pisa
In 2015, the United Nations, continuing on the path taken by the Millennium Goals 2000-2015, approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Agenda is divided into 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that cover all areas of social and economic development and aim at sustainability in a broad and global sense.
The Pro-Rectorate
The University of Pisa Pro-Rectorate for Sustainability and Agenda 2030 coordinates the University’s activities related to the topic of sustainability and oversees the implementation of the Agenda 2030 goals, in collaboration with other relevant institutional figures. Among the Pro-rectorate’s objectives, the most relevant are the reduction of the University’s environmental impact by decreasing the energy consumption versus the use of energy from renewable sources; the promotion of sustainable mobility; the reduction-oriented sustainable waste management, the enhancement of separate waste collection, the materials recycling and upcycling; the enhancement and maintenance of the University's green areas and the promotion of biodiversity; overcoming barriers that prevent individuals from having equal opportunities for growth and success; raising awareness of sustainability issues through training initiatives, events and communication campaigns.
The Commission
The University Commission for Sustainable Development (CoSA), set up in 2020, promotes the involvement and inclusion of the entire university community – teaching staff, technical administrative staff and students - in order to foster the dissemination of a culture of environmental and social sustainability. Its main objective is to formulate proposals to be submitted to the decision-making bodies of the University of Pisa for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals’ implementation, through strategies and concrete actions. The Commission also plays an advisory role on the University’s intervention programmes and participates in discussion and governance tables on territorial policies for sustainability. The Commission is appointed every two years by the Rector and is composed of 20 members, coordinated by the University of Pisa’s Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Agenda 2030, who chairs it.
Members
The Commission is an expression of the entire university community and consists of 20 members, among them teaching staff, technical administrative staff and representatives of the student community appointed by the Rector. The Commission in carrying out its activities is supported by administrative support staff.
